Deficit Reduction Act Passes House
The House of Representatives passed the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) yesterday by a vote of 216 -
214. The measure will now go to the President to sign. It is expected that he will sign it any time in the next couple days. This new law will drastically change the way seniors plan for long-term care.
Of the two New York State "swing" votes, Congressman Sweeney voted against the bill, Congressman Boehlert voted for it. Please contact your members of Congress and either thank them for voting against the bill or express your disappointment that they voted for it.
The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and the New York State Bar Association Elder Law Section are going to be analyzing the new law in the next days and weeks to determine the scope of its impact on our clients and to attempt to clarify the many uncertainties in the language of the law. As we gain critical insights, we will share them with our reading audience.
