Alzheimer's, Sugar and Estrogen
Much to my personal chagrin, high sugar consumption is thought to be a risk factor for developing Alzheimer's Disease later in life.
According to Dr. Edward L. Klaiber, a psychoneuroendocrinologist and President of Broverman Research Foundation, the following are possible risk factors for developing Alzheimer's Disease: Confirmed Risk Factors: Old age, family history of dementia, ApoE genotype (genetic factor), Down's syndrome, female sex; Other Possible Risk Factors: Ethnic groups, head trauma, aluminum in drinking water, increased sugar consumption, personal history of depression, autoimmune thyroiditis, diabetes mellitus, alcohol abuse, Parkinson's disease, sleep disturbances, cerebral glucose metabolism defect, underactivity.
Dr. Klaiber lists the following factors as protective factors against Alzheimer's Disease: Estrogen replacement therapy, anti-inflammatory drugs, high education level, high occupational attainment, exercise, Graves Disease (hyperthyroid). In particular, he emphasizes the role of Estrogen in reducing risk and cites many studies evidencing same.*
